Editorial Review of Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft (Llewellyn's Practical Magick)

This volume is a complete resource to the study and practice of modern, non-denominational Wicca. The book is an illustrated, self-study course for the solitary or group. Included are rituals; exercises for developing psychic talents; information on all major "sects" of the craft; and sections on tools, beliefs, dreams, meditations, divination, herbal lore, healing and ritual clothing.

Review Summary: Okay for covens but ignore the "history."
Review: This old-timer has been on the study list of many covens and solitaries over the years. Unfortunately, it's incredibly outdated. I don't know what the author's ideas are now but in this book he does several irritating things that are simply a no-no today such as:

*Interchanges Wicca and witchcraft - They are two different things folks.
*Refers to the "9 million witches" mythological "Burning Times" figure.
*He relies a little too much on Gerald Gardner's Margaret Murray fascination.
*His egotism is mildly annoying.

But this is still a decent source of information for running and belonging to a Wiccan coven. Not necessarily for the beginner who doesn't have a reliable teacher. It might be difficult for a beginner to wade through the outdated material.

Review Summary: Fools Gold
Review: I do not dare bring any accusation against Satanists or occultists, I understand that these topics are interesting to most people because of the natural human desire to fill the spirit man, with spiritual meaning. Yet this book is Foolish, made by a man who made the choice to live for the opposite of good, which is GOD. DONT LET ANYONE DECIEVE YOU, do you think Satan will be your companion in Hell? The Bible states that those who end up there will look upon satan with contempt and great scorn, as they wonder how such a creature decieved the whole world. He is a defeated enemy of your soul, remember the Devil, is GOD'S DEVIL, he can only do what has been predetermined by the One who created him. Though he rebelled against his Creator GOD ALMIGHTY, remember he is "created" not the Creator. His end is foretold in the Bible, the book of Revelation clearly ecplains his end, as well as the book of Ezekiel; Lake of Fire, forever and ever...wow what a creature is he, already damned, already defeated. WHy learn of him, when you can learn of CHRIST, slain to take away the burdens of sin and guilt in your heart? I recommend watching Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson, Jesus of Nazereth, or the Gospel Of John available on DVD, also the Fabric of Time on DVD, or read NAncy Lou Garcia's Book titled: IF I DIE, John Hagee, and many other Christian authors are intersting if you want to learn about the occult, learn from the safe side..the side of truth. Witchcraft-Wicca it's all the same hidden guise of the biggest trickster of all, Satan himself..to get you turned astray from the reality of the love of God, for you and me. Satan got Adam and Eve with the ploy of power and enlightenment in the GArden Of Eden, his tactics arent much diffrent today, why should he change? he's the deciever of the whole world..

Review Summary: There once was a big, blue book...
Review: I think this book is great if you want a how-to book on creating things, or a book about how much Mr. Buckland adores himself. In the beginning of the book he said that it was a non-denominational guide, but to be honest, it was closest to Gardnarian or of course, Seax-Wica. He also said that anyone who reads it fully will be a Third Degree. That's all we need is a bunch of 16 year olds telling me how they're Third Degree in Seax-Wicca.
The book was bland and filled with much of "Do whatever feels right to you", but then is countered with "you must not purchase something from a store" or "You must put your altar in the east" in the next sentence. He also gives you a how-to manual on how to create magickal items, but not many of us have circular saws or power sanders, not to mention engravers or etchers. To me, this book was not helpful, and I throughly recommend to anyone that despairs when they read this book to drop it and head to the closest copy of Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner.

Love and Light,
Chicory

Review Summary: A classic but...
Review: Not to much to my taste. None the less, it has a lot of basic information. I would rip out the chapter on demons before giving it to a new witch or impressionable one. I find the chapter on calling up demons disturbing and dangerous. The rest of the book is filled with important information. Buckland is just not my cup of tea. I have his candle magic book and I do adapt some of his rituals. Over all, I would not recommend this except to someone with some time on the path and a good dose of common sense and well grounded.
